Where eagles fly

It seems hard to believe, but an easy 30-minutes walk takes you up to 2,575m of altitude. The destination is the Nuvolau mountain refuge, the oldest in Cortina and probably in the Dolomites (it was built in 1883!), starting at the Averau refuge.

From the Averau refuge follow the signposts and the traces in the rock and walk uphill on a ridge.

Once you reach the Nuvolau refuge, an overwhelming panorama opens up: the view sweeps over the peaks of Marmolada, Pale di San Martino, Agner, Civetta, Pelmo, Antelao, Sorapis, Cristallo, Tofane, Lagazuoi, Monte Pore and Cernera.

Down the valley, the high pastures of the beautiful Giau Pass shine in an intense green.

Tip
The Averau refuge can be reached from the Giau pass (road no. 638) with the Fedare chair lift or, starting from the Scoiattoli Refuge, with a short, about 30-minutes walk.
